In the new SAATKORN podcast, I speak to Julia Neuen – serial founder, entrepreneur, women’s health expert and founder of Peaches – about her new book *I Breathe In. I Unwind!*, which is due to be published on 29 September. The subtitle makes it clear where the journey is headed: “Why we’re losing our minds in an irritable republic.” Julia takes a look at the absurdities in politics, the economy, society and the world of work with plenty of humour, satire and a clear personal stance. Her aim isn’t just to make you laugh whilst you’re reading. She wants to encourage us to engage more deeply in conversation with one another – particularly on the topics that make us feel uncomfortable.
One sentence in particular stuck with me: ‘Friction has, in a way, gone out of fashion.’ Julia observes that we are increasingly softening our statements until they barely mean anything at all. But without friction, clear standpoints and a willingness to tolerate differing opinions, there can be no genuine discourse.
Among other things, we discussed the following topics:
👵 What happens when companies phase out the over-50s?
Julia very clearly questions what it means for people and society when experienced employees are replaced by younger talent or AI – and work is thereby lost not only as a source of income, but also as a source of meaning, purpose and social participation.
🤖 Are we thinking far enough ahead when it comes to AI and the future of work?
The story of a corporate employee who is simultaneously building a second career as a gardener serves as a fascinating example of how work, skills and status are changing – and why we may need to completely rethink what actually constitutes a successful career.
🗣️ Have we forgotten how to disagree?
Julia argues for more clarity and less vague language: in companies, just as in our society, we need to regain the ability to tolerate differing viewpoints and discuss them with one another.
In the podcast, we’re giving away a signed copy of Julia’s book – many thanks to her for that!
