In this episode of the SAATKORN CHRO-Talk series, I speak to Giordana Sperling-Doppstadt, Executive Board member and Chief People & Corporate Services Officer at Duisport – the operator of the world’s largest inland port. After holding roles in consultancy, transformation and HR at RWE, Giordana moved to Duisburg and is now responsible for the people strategy in an organisation where around 60 per cent of the workforce are blue-collar employees. One quote from the conversation really stuck with me: “As an HR professional, you have a very, very good chance of having a seat at the table if you understand the business and the company’s strategy.”
Among other things, we discussed the following topics:
🚢 HR at the crossroads of logistics, automation and AI
At Duisport, technology is already transforming both operational and commercial roles. You’ll find out why HR not only needs to build up its own AI expertise, but should also guide the entire organisation through this transformation.
📊 Why an understanding of the business is key for HR
For Giordana, strategic relevance arises when HR truly understands the challenges facing the business. Workforce planning, skills shortages and data-driven decision-making are becoming increasingly important in this regard.
⚙️ Digital HR processes as a lever for greater value creation
From onboarding to offboarding, Duisport systematically analyses process breaks and manual tasks. The aim is a fully digital HR landscape that frees up more time for strategic issues.
