New Work

New Work – what on earth is it? – Wellllll: under the heading ‘New Work’, I’m bringing together everything to do with leadership, flexibility, work-life balance, corporate culture and similar topics. There are now loads of articles on the subject. And if you don’t read, you can always listen. The SAATKORN PODCAST NEW WORK DEEP DIVE is available on both SPOTIFY and SOUNDCLOUD… have fun!

I don’t actually think the term ‘New Work’ is that great; in my opinion, it should really be called ‘BETTER WORK’. After all, the New Work movement is getting older and older ;-) but at its core, it’s about creating a better working world.

So what does ‘better’ mean? – That certainly varies enormously from person to person, depending on where you work geographically, whether you’re self-employed or an employee, whether you’re a woman or a man, whether you work in an SME, a large corporation or perhaps a start-up, whether you work in a industrial setting or in an office, and so on.

I’m particularly interested in how things can be changed, and I’d like to use SAATKORN to help provide inspiration for a better world of work – through inspiring examples, entrepreneurs and ideas.

What does that mean for me in concrete terms? – A world of work that moves away from turbo-capitalism (faster, higher, further) and places greater focus on people. Appreciation, collaborative partnerships and autonomy in decision-making should not be romanticised as some kind of social utopia, but seen as essential for developing and offering high-quality, sustainable products and services. Of course, making money is fun and important too. But I see the purpose of a business more as making employees happy and, in the process, making money.

As a founding member of the NEW WORK Ideas Lab at NEW WORK SE (formerly XING), I’ve been witnessing for years just how dynamically the concept of work is changing. You can listen here to find out how the idea for the XING Award actually came about.

There are so many inspiring individuals and companies who are actively trying to create different conditions for themselves and their organisations (such as Lasse Rheingans here in the podcast) or to interpret the concept of work in a completely different way (such as Tim Leberecht, here in the podcast).

These are just two examples of what’s known as ‘New Work’. I’m fascinated by it and believe that it’s only through such efforts that you can authentically tell a great employer branding story.
